Companion art piece to "If It Meant Living - Chapter 71: "Checkmate"": [link]

I admit it, I squeed the first time I saw this shot from my vid captures. The Normandy was TOTALLY going to rescue Shepard before they had to bail for...reasons.

In my headcannon, which I have helpfully captured in the above-referenced chapter, they DO rescue you - all according to plan. And it is glorious.

Also, pretty dramatic shot capturing the critical moment, I thought ;)

How the hell were they supposed to just pick him/her up? There was no way to dock with the tower and the Conduit beam had been disabled due to the Crucible attaching.

It's the Destroy ending, so Shepard lives. The devs even confirmed that he/she reunites with her crew.

Well, in my fic the Normandy sent the Kodiak after the Crucible fired...but my fic bears little resemblance to what happened in the game, so that's fine. I do think that BEFORE the Crucible fired, it would have been reasonable for the Normandy to believe they were going to be able to pick Shepard up, either by hovering like they did on Earth, or via a shuttle (I realize the Normandy's Kodiak crashed on Earth).

You would think if the Normandy can extract your squad mates while Harbinger is shooting at you, it could also pick Commander Shepard up from the citadel. Though to be honest the former doesn't actually make much sense. Why doesn't Harbinger shoot at the Normandy? So...

Try not to focus too hard on the plot holes, your brain might explode, seriously. I was glad for the EC changes, I really was, because it changed the end from despair to hope, but the explanations for your team ending up on the Normandy, and for the Normandy ending up on the jungle planet, were paper-thin at best. Alas.

On the one hand, things like this frustrate me. On the other, kudos to the Mass Effect team for making me care so much.
